Spotted Eagle Owl with Back Pack Transmitter

Urban Owl Release Project

In this project captive-bred owls were reintroduced into select urban areas. Spotted-Eagle Owls and Barn owls do well in urban areas as long as residents are not actively using rat poison.

We were able to monitor the owls on a daily basis because they are carrying radio telemetry. The aim of this project is to make sure our release methods are correct and that site selection is suitable.

Urban Falcon Release Project

We are at present placing young captive-bred falcons in Durban city, as a method of pigeon control, as well as part of an avi-tourism and awareness program. Young, captive-bred Lanner or Peregrine falcons are fldged from the top of high-rise buildings in the same way as they would fledge from clifff-face scrapes. The juvenile birds are fiited with telemetry equipment and fed daily at their hack-box until they are catching their own food.
